I have concerns around the use of Tryptophan in Ageless Multi-Collagen.Updated 2 years ago

Tryptophan is one of 9 essential amino acids, which are indispensable amino acids that our body needs yet can’t make on its own. In other words, we need to consume them in our diet through foods and supplements.

When a food or supplement contains ALL the essential amino acids in adequate amounts, it is considered a “complete” protein, and this distinction is important because when it comes to protein, quality counts. In general, it’s best to emphasize “high-quality” protein sources.

One of the most important factors determining protein quality is the balance of amino acids. Specifically, protein sources with all the essential amino acids are considered higher quality.

Why does all that matter? Well, collagen protein is considered an “incomplete” protein because it contains all the essential amino acids tryptophan. In fact, because collagen is not a complete protein, the FDA requires that collagen supplements feature a notice that states: “Collagen is not a complete protein. Do not use to replace dietary protein or for weight reduction.”

With all that in mind, we a naturally fermented form of tryptophan to Ageless Multi-Collagen so that it a complete protein—something you’ll find in very, very few collagen supplements. This means Ageless Multi-Collagen supports all the health benefits of a collagen peptide supplement and can be used as a high-quality dietary protein replacement.

Additionally, it’s worth pointing out that each serving of Ageless Multi-Collagen provides 140mg of tryptophan. To put it in perspective, let’s take a look at some other commonly eaten foods and their tryptophan content:

  • A 4-ounce portion (raw) of chicken breast contains 320mg of tryptophan

  • A 3-ounce portion (raw) of lean beef contains over 300mg of tryptophan

  • A 4-ounce portion (raw) of turkey contains 270mg of tryptophan

  • A 3-ounce portion (raw) of wild salmon contains 240mg of tryptophan

  • A glass of milk contains 180mg of tryptophan

  • A ¼ cup of mozzarella cheese contains 180mg of tryptophan

  • A 1-ounce serving of roasted pumpkin seeds contains 160mg of tryptophan

  • A ½ cup of almonds contains 145mg of tryptophan

  • A cup of oats contains 140mg of tryptophan

In short, if you eat food, you consume tryptophan, which is not just healthy, it’s essential. We add it to Ageless Multi-Collagen to make it a higher-quality complete protein.
