Should I be concerned about the amount of sodium in BioTrust Low Carb Protein powder?Updated 10 months ago

Depending on which delicious flavor you choose to enjoy, each serving of BioTrust Low Carb contains between 150 – 200mg of sodium, which is about 6 – 8% of the recommended daily intake. Sodium is an essential mineral that serves a number of key functions in the body:

  • Assists in the absorption of chloride, amino acids, glucose, and water.

  • Regulates extracellular fluid status, blood volume, and blood pressure.

  • Maintains the electrochemical gradient across cell membranes, and tight regulation of this is critical for nerve impulse transmission, cardiac function, and muscle contraction.

It’s important to note that the sodium found in BioTrust Low Carb is a naturally-occurring mineral intrinsic to the milk from which its proteins (e.g., whey, casein) are derived, and it is not added during the manufacturing process.

This is noteworthy because, while sodium tends to get a bad rap, the overwhelming majority of the sodium that the average person eats comes from packaged, processed, store-bought, and restaurant foods. A very small amount comes from sodium that occurs naturally in foods or salt added to foods during cooking or at the table. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 77% of sodium intake comes from processed and restaurant foods.
